Cycling South Africa (Cycling SA) recently unveiled a three-year partnership with the Midvaal Local Municipality, a collaboration poised to elevate cycling in southern Gauteng and solidify its status as a premier sport code.
Talking about the collaboration, MLM Mayor Peter Teixeira says: “We are delighted to welcome this exciting opportunity to partner with Cycling SA. This collaboration will not only elevate cycling in our region but also promote a culture of health and fitness. Furthermore, this collaboration positions Midvaal as the destination of choice, thereby boosting foot traffic that will support our local businesses and tourism sectors, ultimately contributing to the growth of our economy.”
This strategic alliance marks a significant milestone for Cycling SA, opening avenues for the development and promotion of cycling within the region. The focal point of this partnership is the hosting of the prestigious Cycling National Championships, where elite and amateur cyclists from across the country will converge to compete at the highest level.
As part of its commitment to delivering a world-class event, Cycling SA is reviewing all route options for the 2024 National Road and Time Trial Championships hosted by Midvaal Local Municipality.
The consideration includes incorporating the scenic beauty and challenging terrain of Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve while ensuring the safety and convenience of participants by avoiding roads under construction.
“We are excited about the possibilities this partnership brings for the growth of cycling in Southern Gauteng. The Midvaal Municipality shares our vision for fostering a vibrant cycling community and providing athletes with top-notch competitive opportunities,” says Qondisa Ngwenya, president of Cycling South Africa.
Over the next three years, Cycling SA aims to intensively develop the cycling landscape in southern Gauteng. By positioning cycling as a primary sport code, the organisation aims to inspire a new generation of cyclists and cultivate a culture of health, fitness, and camaraderie.
Cycling enthusiasts, sponsors, and the community at large can look forward to witnessing the exhilarating spectacle of the Cycling National Championships as the municipality and Cycling SA embark on this new journey.
