2024 matriculants get a head start through career expo

Jabu Sithole from NWU Vanderbijlpark, and a representative of the Career Exhibition and Information Association said it is important for pupils to apply timeously to institutions of their choice.

SHARPEVILLE. – The saying that preparation is key came to light recently as the St. Stephens Methodist Church partnered with various higher institutions to present an information-packed career expo for all matriculants from in and around Sharpeville.

The Career Exhibition was carried out under the theme: Your Career, your Goals. Some of the exhibitors present at the event include Arcelor Mittal, Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Eduvos and North-West University (NWU).

Over a thousand students from various high schools, including those from lower-level grades graced the event to get information needed to get into various career fields as well as tertiary institutions.

Speaking during the event, Emma Welcome, General President of the Women’s Fellowship said that after realizing that may matriculants finished the year without really thinking about what careers they would like to pursue after completing matric, they decided to come up with a way to get them prepared.

“We want to do away with late applications at tertiary institutions so this is why we decided that our matriculants should get this information as early as possible. This will help them better prepare and also work hard to attain the marks needed to qualify for those courses.”

Welcome said that they had also invited various financial institutions and bursary schemes to educate pupils about the various financial resources they can attain to make furthering their studies easier.

Jabu Sithole from NWU Vanderbijlpark, and a representative of the Career Exhibition and Information Association said it is important for pupils to apply timeously to institutions of their choice.

He added that they also help students to only apply at registered institutions, to avoid being scammed by illegal institutions. He reiterated that pupils also need to know what subjects and marks are required for the different faculties they want to go into.

Sithole urged parents to speak to their children about finances and to encourage them to apply for financial aid on time where needed.
