Relebohile’s (19) brutal killing sparks outrage

"It's worrying how someone dares to take another's life, especially in such a brutal manner.”

EVATON.- A night of fun turned into the brutal killing of 19-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng on Saturday, March 2.

On Friday night, March 1, Relebohile was allegedly fetched by her two female friends and their boyfriends, the couple are said to have then headed to a local pub in Sebokeng. They later spent the evening out in Evaton, only for the night to end terribly when one of the men allegedly raped Mofokeng and began torturing her to death.

The Evaton police received a murder complaint from Beverly Hills and when they arrived at the scene, they found the lifeless body of the 19-year-old lying next to a plastic bag.

Mpho Mofokeng (24), Relebohile’s sister, said: “When I got there, I thought maybe she had blacked out, so I decided to pour water on her but received no response. I do not think I will ever heal from this.”

Relebohile was suffocated until she stopped breathing, as the accused had wrapped her head with a plastic bag, accusing her of stealing their R 2 000. Two men and one girl are said to have returned to Relebohile’s house to look for the money, claiming she had said it was under the TV.

They entered the house with Relebohile’s neighbour to search for the money but found none as the neighbour insisted they fetch Relebohile to show them where she had put the money, and that’s when the neighbour realised something was wrong.

Iviwe Qqibisana (26), the neighbour, said: “I followed them to the house where they were, and as I was entering, the accused was leaving. I believe that’s when he got the chance to escape. Though the door was locked, I managed to open it. Inside, I found Relebohile lying down. I poured water on her, but she did not respond. Checking her heartbeat and pulse, I realised she was no more.”

Paramedics confirmed her death on the scene and the accused has been arrested, and a rape case was opened.

Evaton SAPS spokesperson, Constable Thulisile Msibi said that a murder case was immediately opened for further investigation, and the suspects were arrested.

“What happened to Relebohile does not sit well with me because of the way she died, and I am against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). It’s worrying how someone dares to take another’s life, especially in such a brutal manner,” said Qqibisana.

The accused appeared in the Sebokeng Magistrate Court on Monday, March 4. The case was postponed to Thursday, March 14. Relebohile was laid to rest over the weekend.
