SEDIBENG – Traditionally, the taxi industry has been dominated by old-timers, especially within township communities.
However, amidst challenging economic times, a new breed of taxi operators is emerging, reshaping perceptions and breaking stereotypes.
Meet 33-year-old Tshepo Ntaopane, popularly known as “Stress WaseVaal” among the streets of Sedibeng, who shared his love for driving.
Stress WaseVaal is not your typical taxi operator; the father of two wears multiple hats including social media influencer, brand promoter, and even barman.
His dynamic presence in the community has earned him a reputation that precedes him.
Speaking to Ster South, Ntaopane provided a glimpse into his fast-paced taxi rank life. Always dressed to kill, the enthusiastic taxi operator said: “Gone are the days when driving a taxi was merely a means of transportation. Today, it’s a multifaceted venture requiring strategic branding and social media savvy.”
As an influencer, Ntaopane leverages his social media platforms to engage with his audience, promoting not only his taxi services but also various brands.
“I started working at an early age at Emerald as a barman, then moved between kasi establishments like Lefelong, and Jika maJika among many others. I later rejoined the Emerald team before starting my own cocktail business,” he said.
“I am now pushing a service bar when I am not driving, and also run a takkie washing business and events. I use the taxi to market my events and other businesses. When I organise a gig, I know many people will attend because of my daily involvement with commuters,” he added.
Ntaopane emphasised: “I know there is a stigma about taxi operators, however, I can advise young blood who are interested in driving taxis as an opportunity and a vehicle to lead them to their dreams.” He also mentioned his efforts in promoting local brands, stating: “I’m also pushing local brands because when I wear kasi brands, commuters always want to know where to find them.”
