Boy and driver killed as Bophelong soccer team bakkie capsized

A driver and a young boy lost their lives when a bakkie they were travelling in to a soccer match in Sebokeng capsized.

VANDERBIJLPARK – A tragic accident has claimed the life of a young football player after a bakkie carrying members of a local soccer team overturned near Vanderbijlpark over the weekend, May 04.

Vanderbijlpark police are now investigating a case of Culpable Homicide following the incident, which occurred on the Golden Highway behind the Accelor-Mittal Corporation.

According to Sedibeng Cluster police spokesman, Captain Teboho Lephoto, the team was traveling from Movhango towards Sebokeng when the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another car.

The bakkie rolled multiple times, resulting in injuries to several players and tragically claiming the life of one player at the scene.

Lephoto added that the driver of the bakkie succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital after the injured passengers were rushed to local hospitals.

“The police and medical personnel were summoned quickly, and numerous players were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, including the driver himself. Later, the police were informed that the driver also succumbed to his injuries,” stated Lephoto.

The accident has left the community in shock and mourning with messages of condolences pouring to families on several social media groups linked to the Bophelong community.
