VANDERBIJLPARK – The Emfuleni Local Municipality has rubbished claims of a cholera outbreak in the Vaal River.
This comes after a report by a popular social media publication titled “Vaal Residents to Boil Water Following Presence of Cholera in the Vaal River.”
The municipality issued a statement on Wednesday (October 9) in which the municipality’s spokesperson, Makhosonke Sangweni, cautioned against unsettling reports.
“The sites mentioned in the viral report are in the North West and Northern Cape. This implies that residents of Emfuleni are not affected by these developments. The municipality dissociates itself from these reports and advises residents to follow ELM social media platforms for credible information,” he said.
Sangweni added that their water department Metsi-a-Lekoa constantly exercises necessary caution each month by collecting 20 water samples across the municipality for laboratory testing.
“This is to ensure that we are informed about the latest microbiological status of our water. Based on the social media reports, there is no cause for concern regarding cholera in ELM. As per the standard cautionary policy of the municipality, residents will be duly notified of any outbreak,” he added.
Sangweni said: “The municipality condemns those who grab every opportunity to spread misinformation with intentions to taint our image with negative stories.”
