VANDERBIJLPARK – Sex talks remain taboo for many, but the need to educate people about it is important.
This was made evident by students from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) together with a local NGO, Hands of Hope, as they brought a very hands-on demonstration to the Golden Highway.
On November 6, shocked passersby were treated to an unusual sight as second-year Public Relations students openly demonstrated safe sex practices using ‘Big John,’ a large dildo.
The street-side session wasn’t just about putting condoms on dildos and applying lube, though that certainly drew the attention.
According to the group, calling themselves the Chamber of Transparency, they aimed to educate the public on a wider range of sexual health topics.
The members said they wanted to shake the silence around HIV, high blood pressure, and overall sexual health issues often ignored in communities like Joko Tea and Vanderbijlpark.
Speaking to Ster, Chamber of Transparency member, Karabo Ngobeni said it’s important that people know how to protect themselves.
“We were requested to select a local organisation and create an awareness event. Our group chose sex talks, HIV, and high blood pressure because too many people don’t even know their health status,” she said.
For Hands of Hope representative Montso Mosa, their involvement in the campaign was about filling a knowledge gap.
“We’re here to support VUT students and show how condoms should be used. Many young adults think they know it all, but still put themselves at risk by not using protection correctly,” she said.
One of the brave locals who joined the demo, Ntokozo Mnguni, praised the effort.
“It’s important that people are taught this. So many pretend to know how, but some still make risky mistakes. As the community of Joko Tea, we would appreciate having such engagements more often,” she said.
