VANDERBIJLPARK – Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has appointed S’celo Mahlalela as a Deputy Vice Chancellor for Resources and Operations, effective from November 1 for the next four years.
Mahlalela’s appointment is part of VUT’s efforts to address leadership gaps and enhance management in areas such as financial strategy, human resources, infrastructure development and maintenance, ICT, campus security, and logistics.
These initiatives are vital for the institution’s sustainable growth. Mahlalela brings more than 20 years of experience in executive and non-executive leadership.
His academic background includes graduate studies and executive training at prestigious institutions, including Harvard University, which has equipped him with a global perspective on leadership.
Mahlalela’s experience spans the financial services, medical schemes, and state-owned sectors, with significant roles at Eskom and Blue IQ (now known as the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency).
In higher education, Mahlalela has held key leadership roles at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), where he served as Chief Financial Officer and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Operations.
This combination of experience across private, public, and educational sectors positions him uniquely to support VUT’s mission.
Professor Khehla Ndlovu, VUT’s ViceChancellor and Principal, commented on this appointment, stating: “This position has been vacant for some time, creating a significant gap in executing VUT’s strategic vision.”
Ndlovu further emphasised that Mahlalela’s role is crucial to advancing the university’s objectives and meeting the needs of its students and stakeholders. One of Mahlalela’s key responsibilities will be revitalising the university’s infrastructure.
Ndlovu highlighted the recently approved upgrades to the university stadium and the Life Sciences Building, noting: “These enhancements reflect VUT’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities that promote academic excellence and enrich campus life.”
Expressing his enthusiasm, Mahlalela said: “I am excited to join VUT and look forward to working with the team to strengthen our strategic initiatives and enhance operational effectiveness.”
As VUT embarks on this new chapter under Mahlalela’s leadership, the university is well-positioned to address its challenges and implement strategies that align with its long-term objectives.
