ANDERBIJLPARK – Following an ultimatum by the Democratic Alliance calling for the removal of the mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality, Sipho Radebe, the party recently filed a motion of no confidence.
This comes days after the Emfuleni DA Caucus leader, Nkosi Duncan Mthembu issued a video media statement gunning for the mayor.
On Tuesday, November 12, Mthembu met with the embattled municipality Municipal Manager, April Ntuli to hand over a letter of a motion of no confidence on Radebe.
Some of the grievances listed in the memo supporting reasons for the removal of the mayor included questioning of the mayor’s capacity and inability to provide the necessary leadership and political guidance to uphold the position.
“The municipality has lost control of the two essential utilities due to failing to honour the current accounts. The Electricity account has escalated to more than 6 billion which we owe to Eskom,” he said.
Mthembu added that since the appointment of Radebe as mayor, there has been delay in employees’ salaries due to attachments of the Municipality bank accounts which could have been avoided had the municipality honored payments in time.
“The municipality has failed for the past years to collect waste in the greater parts of Emfuleni. The executive mayor presides over an executive who has had the MMC of Human settlement absent for over six months in her responsibilities,” he added.
Mthembu said “Under the leadership of the Executive Mayor we have returned grants to the treasury due lack of proper planning. 72% of clean water is lost due to dilapidated infrastructure which results in more than 100 million a month loss,” said Mthembu.
ELM spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni confirmed the receipt of an application for a motion with the MM.
