SEBOKENG – An elderly man was killed during a high-impact car crash on March 3.
The horrific incident happened on the notorious Waterdal Road, just outside Boiketlong, when two light motor vehicles collided in the early hours of the morning.
According to reports, the driver of a silver Suzuki Swift died on the scene after being trapped in his vehicle.
Bystanders, eyewitnesses, and passersby gathered in shock as they watched emergency responders, including Emfuleni Fire Fighters, investigating the scene.
While dozens of role players combed the scene, a crumpled white Mercedes-Benz sprawled in the middle of the road facing the oncoming direction and a Suzuki Swift lay wrecked in a roadside ditch.
The devastating scene was marked by broken glass, debris from the vehicles’ plastic, and fibreglass.
Speaking to Ster South, Sebokeng Police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane confirmed the incident.
“At around 05:30, we received a call about a terrible accident on Waterdal Road. When our officers arrived on the scene, they found two males, one badly injured, and another trapped inside his vehicle,” she said.
Mokhachane added that while the trapped driver died on the scene, the other was taken to a local hospital.
“We can confirm that a case of culpable homicide was opened and investigations are underway to determine the cause of death,” she said.
Vereeniging station commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba urged motorists to be vigilant while driving on the abovementioned road.
Meanwhile, while onlookers whispered from the sides, trying to piece together what may have caused the fatal accident, an eyewitness who refused to be named said a reckless driver pulling a trailer triggered the accident.
The source added that the unidentified vehicle dumped garbage on the roadside before making a sudden, dangerous U-turn, sending morning traffic into chaos.
“The car came from nowhere, disturbing the morning traffic. The next thing we heard was loud bangs,” she said.
Motorists and bystanders flooded social media with posts of the accident, prompting panic and disorder.
