SASOLBURG – Two bright sparks from Technical High School Sasolburg recently swapped textbooks for welding torches.
This comes after Sentle Sefatsa and Kgotsofalo Nhlapho turned heads after being selected to attend the Arc Welding Course hosted at SA Truck Bodies.
The Grade 12 pupils represented their school, embarking on an NQF Level 4 course, carrying 40 SAQA credits at one of the country’s biggest truck and trailer manufacturers in Bloemfontein.
According to the duo, the opportunity marks the second time they have been called back, a sign that these teens are not just playing with fire, but mastering it.

When Ster South visited the school recently, the two were still buzzing with excitement.
Nhlapho said, “The training was very challenging, but fun. I learnt new welding skills, which improved what I thought I knew.
“I believe now I can apply new techniques and share the skills with my fellow pupils,” she said.
With automotive as her first choice, Nhlapho said she doesn’t regret joining welding.
Sefatsa, who is following in her mother’s footsteps, shared how intimidating the environment was at first.
“Choosing welding became a first choice because my mom was in the same industry. The journey wasn’t an easy one, however, I continued to forge on,” she said.
Reacting to her selection to attend the course, Nhlapho said, “That left my mom super proud, and so am I. The training has helped me gain more insight into my limited knowledge about the subject.”
“The course was frustrating because one had to perfectly apply angle and speed, among other techniques,” she added.
Llewellyn Pienaar, welding educator, weighed in on his reaction to the selection of his pupils.
“I’m thrilled to see my students’ hard work and talent recognized. This achievement reflects not only their dedication but also the supportive learning environment we’ve fostered. It motivates me to continue inspiring and guiding them to reach their full potential. I’m proud to play a role in their educational journey,” he said.
