Patient assault drama rocks Kopanong Hospital

Gauteng Health Department says the incident was sparked by a violent patient.

VEREENIGING – Kopanong Hospital has been thrown into the spotlight after a shocking video surfaced showing a patient allegedly being beaten and insulted by staff behind ward curtains.

The video, which has been making the rounds on social media, left community members outraged and the DA fuming.

The DA’s Sedibeng leadership slammed the hospital, calling the alleged assault “a travesty and a blatant attack on human rights.”

DA Emfuleni Caucus chairperson Tumelo Mashigo condemned the incident in a statement.
“This is against the code of conduct of nurses and public servants. We will not rest until those involved are brought to book,” he said.

Following the outcry, hospital bosses confirmed an internal probe has been launched.
A full report is expected in 25 working days.

But the Gauteng Health Department says there’s more to the story.

Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba claims the incident was sparked by a violent patient.

“The patient seen behind the screens had earlier assaulted another patient. Nursing staff and security officers were managing the situation when the video was taken,” Modiba explained.

According to the department, the unruly patient allegedly went on to attack three security officers, forcing staff to admit them to the Mental Health Care Users ward.
