Omnia joins national drive to plant 10 million trees

“Trees provide fruit, nuts, and medicinal resources, supporting nutrition and food security," said Refiloe Mohale.

SASOLBURG – Contributing towards the government’s call to plant one million trees, Omnia Sasolburg, together with several key stakeholders, joined in the campaign and planted dozens of trees.

Partnering with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), Primestars, and The YouthStart Foundation, the firm hosted a tree planting activation on Friday, September 26.

The initiative, championed by Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts, aims to achieve President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ambitious national directive to plant 10 million trees by 2026.

It represents a united effort by the corporate sector and government to restore the environment, fight climate change, and create sustainable, greener communities across South Africa.

Speaking to Ster, Group Sustainability Executive at Omnia, Ditebogo Malatsi said, “At Omnia, we believe that innovating to enhance life also means innovating to preserve it. Our participation in this campaign demonstrates our commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, and the empowerment of young people. Together, we are creating a greener future that will benefit not only our communities today but generations to come.”

The tree planting activation is part of a broader environmental and social responsibility framework, highlighting Omnia’s dedication to climate resilience and ecological restoration.

General Manager of Primestars and The YouthStart Foundation, Refiloe Mohale, reminded attendees: “Today is not just about planting trees – it is about laying down roots for a greener tomorrow, roots that will be nurtured and carried forward by our youth. This is action. This is us delivering. This is unity in motion.”

According to Mohale, the One Million Trees Campaign directly addresses urgent national priorities and global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including zero hunger, no poverty, sustainable cities, and climate action.

“Trees provide fruit, nuts, and medicinal resources, supporting nutrition and food security. Greening projects offer job creation opportunities, especially for youth and women in rural and peri-urban areas. Urban forests improve air quality, reduce noise, and enhance liveability in cities,” he said.

Omnia’s role in this activation demonstrates what corporate leadership in sustainability looks like, moving beyond pledges to tangible action.
