Johan Heyns’ staff joins GBV picket

As Mzansi joined arms in a national protest against Gender Based Violence and femicide, staffers at Johan Heyns also formed part.

VANDERBIJLPARK – As the country united in protest against gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide on 21 November, staff at the Johan Heyns Community Health Centre also added their voices to the cause.

Dozens of nurses and doctors picketed in solidarity, holding placards, singing and chanting as part of the nationwide call for GBV to be declared a State of Disaster.

“Stop killing us,” “End GBV today,” and “Break the silence before it breaks you” were some of the messages displayed on the placards held by women and men dressed in black and purple to honour those who lost their lives at the hands of abusers.

Speaking to Ster, wellness coordinator at the Sedibeng Health District, based at Johan Heyns CHC, Dikeledi Dladla, explained why staff felt compelled to take part.

“We gathered as health employees from different positions and departments to show support for those who are victims of GBV,” she said.

“This is our way of showing that we stand with our fellow South Africans who are affected by this pandemic. We also want the community and our colleagues to know that the wellness unit is here to offer help and support wherever we can.”

Dladla said GBV is not limited to homes — employees are also suffering in workplaces.

“Everyone is affected by this monster, yet many people don’t speak out because they fear being victimised. Today’s demonstration is a show of strength for those who suffer behind closed doors, enduring pain day after day.”

She called on women to speak out about their experiences, not only for their own sake but to empower others.

“Let us lend a helping hand to those in need and give support. If we try to help one another, we can defeat this monster. Speaking out helps not only the victim, but also the many who die inside while hiding their scars,” she concluded.
