The rebirth of Motswako Arts Centre

An emotional Abbey Maeane-Molaba thanked his team, community members as well as stakeholders involved for their unwavering support.

Motswako Arts Centre has been reborn, launching a state-of-the-art creative hub in the heart of Evaton, where South African stories will be told loudly and boldly. The rebirth was made possible by various stakeholders, including the EtexSA/Siniat, Sedibeng TVET College, and Ceramic Industries.

Speaking during the launch, an emotional Abbey Maeane-Molaba thanked everyone who played a role in making the lifelong dream of getting a permanent home for Motswako come true.

“I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported, encouraged, and believed in this vision. What was once a place of neglect has now been transformed into a creative hub filled with possibilities. To those who stood by me, offered guidance, shared kind words, and showed up — your presence made all the difference. Your belief gave this dream strength, and your support turned a vision into reality.”

Maeane-Molaba said the success belongs to all those present.

“It is living proof that when passion meets support and dedication, truly great things happen. Thank you for being part of this journey. The best is yet to come.”

The centre has become a beacon of hope for the Evaton community, running projects including Fofa Mantso: a creative after-school programme for children and youth aged 8–16 that combines academic support with artistic activities, MAFUBE Class Act: A theatre and poetry initiative focused on identifying, nurturing, and celebrating emerging creative talent. It typically includes auditions, workshops, mentorship, and live showcases for actors, poets, and performers.

The centre showcases vibrant cultural festivals and community engagement events, celebrating and promoting local culture and artistic talent. This includes an array of programmes such as theatre performances, dance showcases, live music, spoken word poetry, art exhibitions, and many more.

These events bring together artists and audiences to build community pride and creative expression.

Various speakers congratulated the team, stating that they had built something sustainable for the benefit of the Evaton community.

“Every town needs a Motswako Arts Centre, a place where children can learn a skill instead of roaming the streets. We hope that this day creates a ripple effect in our communities where places such as this one are needed.”
