UPDATE: Technicians conclude investigations at Curie Boulevard substation

ELM says a 30 MVA transformer and cables have been damaged beyond repair following Sunday’s fire, and technicians will commence with rigging the standby transformer.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Almost twelve hours after the Curie Boulevard substation fire on Sunday (February 22), Emfuleni Local Municipality says technicians have concluded investigations into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.

ELM issued an update on the situation and the status of the investigations.

ELM spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni said, “Technicians have concluded all necessary investigations at the Town Substation. The 30 MVA transformer and cables have been damaged beyond repair by the fire. Today, the team will commence with rigging the standby transformer to prepare for testing tomorrow [Tuesday, February 24]. ETR will be communicated once testing is completed.”

Sangweni added that more updates will be shared with affected consumers in Bonanne, Stephanopark, Bophelong, Bophelong Extensions, parts of NW 7, CW 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. The municipality is pleading for patience from all affected consumers.
