Fatal crash on R553 claims one life

A man has died following a horror head-on collision on the old Golden Highway, not far from where 14 pupils tragically lost their lives in January.

VANDERBJILPARK – A man has died following a horrific collision on the R553 this morning.

The accident involved a bakery truck and a Citroën car.

According to local police, the truck was travelling north towards Sebokeng when the driver of the Citroën reportedly drove into oncoming traffic.

Although the truck driver attempted to swerve, the car struck the driver’s side of the truck. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and overturn.

Several law enforcement agencies, including SAPS, Emfuleni Traffic, and local emergency services, were at the scene.

The truck driver was left in a critical condition, while two other occupants suffered minor injuries.

The Citroën Driver, travelling alone, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. All three survivors were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Speaking to Ster at the scene, Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is now under investigation.

The accident happened in the same area as a devastating taxi accident in January, which claimed the lives of 14 pupils.
