DE DEUR – Police and other law enforcement officials conducted their weekly crime clampdown in De Deur today.
The latest Operation Shanela, led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, focused on making the community safer through roadblocks and targeted searches.
The day proved successful with 38 illegal immigrants taken into custody and 21 suspects arrested for possession of drugs.
Officers also caught one person dealing in illicit cigarettes and two others for selling alcohol without a license.
Alongside the arrests, traffic officials handed out fines amounting to R30 200 to motorists non-compliant with road traffic regulations.
While the local operation was underway, provincial detectives were busy across the wider region. Their overnight efforts resulted in the arrest of 972 wanted suspects for various crimes, including 214 people linked to violence against women and children.
Mthombeni told the media that the heavy police presence was necessary to tackle specific problems in the Meyerton and De Deur areas.
“The hijackings are mostly experienced on the highways or provincial roads. We are determined to ensure that the community is safe,” he said.
He assured the public that those arrested would face the full might of the law. noting that recent police work has already led to significant court convictions.
