VANDERBIJLPARK – From experienced runners partaking in the race in an attempt to break their personal records to barefoot athletes embracing the raw essence of athletics.
Hundreds of participants attended the first Green Mile race on May 16.
This is after the riverside resort in Vanderbijlpark was turned into a vibrant sight of energy and determination.
While crowds roared on the sidelines to support runners, loudspeakers echoed in the jungle-like space opposite the Animal World, motivating those planning to quit running to battle till the finish line.
Colourful running shoes reflecting against the semi-wet tarred road marked the day as athletes powered through the demanding one-mile challenge.
The run was a collaboration between Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark and Tsogo Sun’s Emerald Resort & Casino to introduce a new concept to the region’s athletics calendar.
On the day, the air was filled with excitement as runners of all ages gathered at the starting line armed with hope for victory.
Speaking to Ster, Race Director Johan Strydom described the event as a major milestone for athletics in the region.
“Nedbank and Emerald Tsogo Sun partnered to host the race. Apart from the Green Mile, we also hosted a half-mile event for rising stars,” he said.
Young athletes took part in a shorter distance race, and as they sprinted through the park with enthusiasm, loud applause from family and supporters echoed.
Strydom said a total of 138 athletes participated in the Green Mile, while 20 runners tackled the half-mile race.
One of the day’s biggest talking points was the enticing R5 000 incentive offered to any athlete capable of breaking the four-minute barrier in the dream mile.
The target narrowly escaped the runners, adding anticipation to the next event. Strydom expressed satisfaction with the turnout and believes the race has laid the foundation for a bigger future.
“As this was the first mile event in the Vaal Triangle, we are satisfied with the outcome and believe this will grow into something big for the future in the Vaal Triangle,” he said.
The success of the event was also driven by strong community and business support.
Sponsors, including Fuel-X, AK Boerdery, Cormed Clinic, and Vaal Makelaars, contributed towards making the race possible.
