Mayor gives insight to the state of affairs in Sedibeng

In her 2026 State of the Municipality Address, Lerato Maloka highlighted Sedibeng's plans to boost economic growth, create jobs, and improve service delivery.

The Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor, Lerato Maloka, has delivered the 2026 State of the Municipality Address (SoMA) at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Heidelberg, offering a detailed look into the local government’s current affairs.

Speaking under the theme of consolidating plans, re-inventing the economy, and accelerating service delivery, Maloka acknowledged that the region continues to face significant socio-economic challenges that cause hardship for many residents.

To combat these difficulties, the municipality is strengthening partnerships, improving co-ordination across different levels of government, and creating opportunities for sustainable growth through the District Development Model’s “One Plan.” Economic growth in the region remains modest, with the district recording a 0.9% growth rate in 2024. However, recovery is projected to rise to 1.6% this year and reach 1.9% in 2027.

Although unemployment remains high, Maloka emphasised that the municipality is focusing on developing industries that create jobs and support economic inclusion. She noted that Sedibeng’s youthful population presents a vital opportunity to invest in skills, entrepreneurship, and employment pathways.

A central driver for this economic renewal in the Vaal Triangle is the Vaal Special Economic Zone. This initiative will explore diverse investment opportunities, including green industrialisation, to transform the area into a leading hub for low-carbon manufacturing and renewable energy.

It will also target high-impact investments in food, agriculture, and agro-industries, alongside gateway logistics that capitalise on the district’s location. Furthermore, the plan includes investing in the blue economy and tourism along the Vaal River, as well as building a smart city and an aerotropolis to drive urban development.

On community matters, the mayor took a moment to address the tragic loss of 14 learners in a scholar transport accident at the beginning of this year, and she honoured the dedicated service of the late former Councillor Taudi Simon Maphalla.

Reviewing municipal performance, Maloka said that governance and accountability have improved, resulting in stronger audit outcomes and stable labour relations. Financially, despite facing fiscal pressures, the municipality managed a balanced budget and continues to prioritise local procurement, youth participation, and support for township enterprises.

The mayor also used the platform to highlight recent successes, such as the launch of the Vereeniging Intermodal Facility, the Section 63 Water and Sanitation Intervention, and the Vereeniging Fresh Produce Market.

Ultimately, the address spotlighted ongoing initiatives designed to boost service delivery, economic growth, infrastructure development, and overall community well-being.
