Policeman remains in custody after deadly dispute over chicken gizzards

The court case of a police officer accused of murder, following an argument, has been postponed.

SEBOKENG – A police officer, Detective Constable Elias Moeketsi Pinkoane (34), has appeared before the Sebokeng Magistrates’ Court charged with murder, attempted murder, and firearm-related offences.

The officer, who is based at the Orange Farm Police Station, is accused of handling a firearm whilst under the influence of alcohol and discharging it in a public place. His case has been postponed until July 20 to allow him to appoint legal representation and prepare a formal bail application.

The charges follow a violent incident on the morning of July 12 at the BK Lifestyle centre in Sebokeng.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Pinkoane visited the establishment to buy chicken gizzards but was informed that they were sold out. Pinkoane allegedly asked the vendor who had purchased the final portion, and the vendor pointed out a customer.

NPA spokesperson Tshegofatso Makhudu confirmed that the accused then approached the customer and an argument began between the two men.

“During the altercation, the customer reportedly offered the accused one skewer of chicken gizzards. However, the accused allegedly demanded additional portions for his girlfriend, which the customer refused,” said Makhudu.

It is alleged that the officer then walked to a state vehicle, retrieved a firearm through the window, and opened fire at the customer and nearby bystanders before fleeing the scene.

Police officers patrolling the area responded to the incident, where they found the victim’s brother had died. Other victims were transported to the hospital for treatment. Pinkoane was arrested at his home later that day.
