10 arrested during hijacked building crackdown
The operation forms part of efforts to clamp down on crime.
A high-density crackdown on hijacked buildings was conducted on October 7 in Sebokeng. The operation forms part of efforts to address crime, illegal occupation, and other criminal activities in identified hotspots.
The multidisciplinary team included the SAPS, the Department of Community Safety, the Emfuleni Traffic Department, the Department of Home Affairs, Emfuleni Buildings Control, and Siyabonga Patrollers.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane said members conducted searches and patrols in identified areas, including hijacked buildings, hotspots, filling stations, taxi ranks, ATMs, and shopping malls, and searched persons and vehicles.
“The operation yielded good results with seven suspects nabbed for being in the country illegally, two for having illicit cigarettes and being in the country illegally, and one for possession of illegal cigarettes.”
Mokhachane said the arrested suspects are expected to appear in court after being processed in accordance with all the legal requirements.
“The SAPS remain committed to intensifying operations in areas identified as hotspots and to disrupting criminal activities that threaten the safety and security of communities.”
Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho welcomed the operation’s success. Mukwevho made a clarion call to community members to continue working with the police by providing information about criminal activities.
“Operations such as these demonstrate our commitment to reclaiming spaces that are vulnerable to criminal activities and ensuring that our communities remain safe. We will continue to conduct intelligence-driven operations, patrol identified hotspots, and take decisive action against individuals who disregard the law. Police in the district continue visibility operations and law-enforcement activities to maintain law and order and enhance the safety of residents.
