Basketball brought to schools

"Our goal is to have the best school basketball teams in Sedibeng.”

SHARPEVILLE.- Primary and Secondary Schools participated in the one-day basketball tournament that took place at Itsose Primary School on Easter Monday.

This school sports program was organised by the Sedibeng Schools Basketball League.

The tournament was divided into different age categories that included the u/14 boys and girls, u/16 both boys and girls, and u/18 boys and girls. It was action after action throughout the day with schools fighting for the championship trophy and medals.

The purpose of the tournament was to introduce basketball games at the school level.

This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Pinky Machobane from the Sedibeng Schools Basketball League. Machobane told Sedibeng Ster Sport that they will host this tournament again in four months.

“We have realised that kids are starting to have an interest in basketball, and soon they are going to start school league games which they will be playing every two weeks. We want to introduce basketball in schools and develop more players and teachers. Our goal is to have the best school basketball teams in Sedibeng,” she told Sedibeng Ster Sport.

It was interesting moments with the u/14 boys and girls games having to be stopped now and then for the referees to explain the game’s rules. However, as soon as they got it right, they started to enjoy every moment of action. Jet Nteo Secondary School was crowned the champions in the u/18 boys’ category with Thuto Lore Secondary School coming second in the group. Phoenix Secondary finished fourth place.

Jet Nteo Secondary School also did it again when they were crowned the champions in the girls category with Mohloli Secondary School coming in second place. However, Mohloli redeemed themselves when their u/16 boys were crowned the champions.

Thuto Lore Secondary School finished as the runner-up.

Tshepiso Primary School girls made their school proud when they were crowned the champions in the u/14 girls while Jet Nteso Secondary School came second. Emmanuel Primary School came first position in the u/14 boys. Sediba Primary School and Tshepiso Primary School came second and third respectively.
