The DA believes in democracy for a few: ANC Gauteng

"This is why, in its Swart gevaar politics as expressed in the election campaign advert it characterises parties that enjoy the support of millions of Africans as violent, corrupt, and untrustworthy."

SEDIBENG. – The DA doesn’t believe in a democracy that represents all people; it believes in democracy for a few.

This is the belief of the African National Congress (ANC) as it condemned the election campaign advert of the Democratic Alliance (DA) that was launched recently. The advert depicts the burning of the South African National flag.

The ANC Gauteng said that the advertisement goes beyond what is moral and reasonable for political campaigning.  In the advert, the DA makes claims about the Armageddon that will befall South Africa should the ANC retain the majority or enter into a coalition with other opposition parties.

ANC Gauteng said that these claims are ridiculous and that the DA’s argument has no basis.

“For one thing, the ANC has governed South Africa for three decades, during which time, the country has maintained one of the strongest constitutional democracies in the world, with strong institutions and democratic principles. The DA, in line with its regressive politics, insists that the burning of the national flag is a form of protest that is protected by the right to freedom of expression. In so arguing, it disregards the immorality of such an action and completely ignores the posture that many countries across the world have on the subject of burning national symbols, particularly the flag.”

The party further said that France, Germany, Greece, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and many other countries in the Global North, which the DA supposedly regards as great examples of democracy, have strict laws prohibiting the burning of the national flag.

“Such action is deemed criminal and prosecutable by law. The DA doesn’t believe in a democracy that represents all people – it believes in democracy for a few. It does not believe in the idea of a non-racist South Africa, but in a South Africa where African races are marked out as subservient beings. And this is why, in its Swart gevaar politics as expressed in the election campaign advert, it characterises parties that enjoy the support of millions of Africans as violent, corrupt, and untrustworthy.”
