Cyclists, gear up for the Midvaal Fast One!

Cyclists have two distance options, being 105 km and 50 km.

MEYERTON. – There’s a buzz of excitement as the Rotary Club of Riverside and the Midvaal Municipality wrap up preparations for this year’s Midvaal Fast One Cycle Challenge, taking place on Sunday, January 26. Now in its 28th year, The Midvaal Fast One is regarded as a prestigious Road Classic Cycle Challenge.

It annually attracts entries country wide as well as from abroad, giving the Midvaal Municipality, as main sponsor, an excellent opportunity to show thousands of visiting cyclists and spectators its well-known hospitality. Midvaal is the top performing municipality in Gauteng, with the best track record of good governance and excellent service delivery. Midvaal will undoubtedly seize the opportunity to market the area as a desirable tourist and investors’ destination.

The Midvaal Fast One is still one of the fastest, if not the fastest road race in the country. The event starts and finishes at the Midvaal Raceway in Meyerton. Cyclists have two distance options, being 105 km and 50 km. As safety is paramount, wearing a helmet is compulsory.
Licensed riders have their own CSA License. All other riders either have their club licenses or, if not, they need to take out a “Day License” directly from the CSA website or use the appropriate block on the Peaktiming online entry portal.

For more information or to enter, either visit: https://www.thefastone.org/ or https://bit.ly/3Yxf64A

Participants who do not have a timing chip may enter but will not get an official timing result by Peaktiming. The roads involved are in a fairly good condition but the Rotary Club of Riverside and Midvaal aim to make sure there are no potholes on the day of the race. This obviously translates into greater safety for the cyclists and to the overall prestige of the race.

Although the 50 km race is a fun ride, for safety reasons the organisers discourage cyclists younger than 12 years to enter, and then at all times be under adult supervision. No cyclist younger than 15 is allowed to enter the 105 km race.

HamNet Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Network makes use of The Fast One as a practice event for emergencies. They put tracking devices on ambulances (ER24) and sweeper vehicles to decide on the best service and fastest action in case of emergency. There will be marshals along the entire route and 12 500 litres of fluids will be available at water points.

The Rotary Club aims to make it a day of fun and achievement. A beer garden will be available with ample seating for spectators, and local vendors will supply food and refreshments.
By participating in the race, cyclists will help uplift numerous communities through projects run by the Rotary Club of Riverside.

* Entries for the 2025 Midvaal Fast One are open until midnight on January 20. Registration will be at Cycle Lab, Fourways, on January 23 and 24 from 09:00 to 17:00, and at President Hyper in Vanderbijlpark on Saturday, January 25, from 09:00 till 13:00. No entries will be allowed on the race day, but late entries will be possible during registration. All cyclists are requested to collect their numbers during registration. Those who live far or can not collect them during those designated days, may do so at the venue on the day of the race.
