ELM libraries chess club launches

"This is fostering social cohesion among the community members."

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Libraries Chess Club was recently officially launched at the Vanderbijlpark Community Library.

The programme was launched by the mother body Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association (EVCA) to promote this sport in the Emfuleni communities. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Johannes Lepota, who is the man behind this brainchild said EVCA together with the ELM Libraries management are using this programme as an indefinite pilot project to revive the use of libraries by learners, students and all community members.

According to Lepota this is fostering social cohesion among the community members. Lepota told Sedibeng Ster Sport this programme focuses on various areas of development, socially or educationally. The launch was made fun by running a rapid chess event for U13s, a girls’ and an open session. The players who came in the top were awarded trophies with all the participants awarded the certificates of participation.

“I would like to thank the stakeholders who sponsored their library chess club by providing water, breakfast, and a mini lunch for the participants. I also want to thank all the people who made the event successful. I want to thank the parents who allowed their children to participate in this programme. Last but not least, I want to acknowledge Vaaltonians for continuing to support our learners/youth in their schoolwork and help them explore their talents in different areas of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation,” he said.
