I will leave it and become a spectator!

"I will become a spectator and no one will blame me!"

SEDIBENG.- Just like a child having fun in the street, the day I’m no longer enjoying sports, I will leave.

I will become a spectator!

This might sound like a man who has given up on his childhood dream.

Absolutely not!

Growing up in the newsroom I saw a young boy become a man, and girls become women in sports. However, the upcoming generation faces the biggest challenge as it seems their dreams are not so bright, because of the organisation of our sporting structures in Sedibeng. Zakes’ Sports Corner realises this is becoming a boring topic to address every week, year after year, but our sporting facilities are an important topic, to say the least.

Over the weekend at Cecil Old Ridge Park Sport grounds clearly indicated that our region is not ready to compete against the best regarding playing facilities. The games had to be delayed due to municipal workers cutting the grass and marking the playing field.

Really!?

How long did the teams and the municipality know there would be games taking place at the venue?

These were official games nogal. Not long ago, Zakes’ Sports Corner said, “It can’t be business as usual” but it seems as if my plea fell on deaf ears. The truth is that our sports deserve better, especially the athletes. Zakes’ Sports Corner is under the impression that somebody doesn’t take sports seriously in this region, especially football, which happens to be the number one sport in the world.

Whatever transpired over the weekend is a clear indication that it would take this region probably another 10 years before we have a team playing top-flight football.

Yes, Zakes’ Sports Corner has just said it!

Zakes’ Sports Corner is aware of the effort from Sedibeng Soccer Legends to call a Soccer Indaba to revive this sleeping giant called Vaal Triangle. Back to the issue of facilities, the truth is that we don’t have decent facilities in our community for such projects, apart from private facilities like your Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and NWU Vaal.

Like I said at the beginning of this article, just like a child having fun in the street, the day I’m no longer enjoying it, I will leave.

I will become a spectator and no one will blame me!
