Businesses, residents frustrated by Metsimaholo’s inaction – DA

Linda Day, DA councillor in Metsimaholo says the party will launch a petition demanding urgent repairs to crumbling infrastructure

The DA in Metsimaholo is taking action to address the severe neglect of Naledi by the Metsimaholo Local Municipality (MLM).

Linda Day, DA councillor in Metsimaholo says the party will launch a petition demanding urgent repairs to crumbling infrastructure, which will be submitted to the mayor, municipal manager, and relevant authorities for accountability.

“For years, Naledi has suffered neglect, with little to no maintenance. Roads have deteriorated to the point where small vehicles sustain daily damage. Failing infrastructure has also led to sewer system collapses, worsening the crisis.”

In a statement on February 4, Day states that despite numerous complaints, no tangible action has been taken.

“Naledi, a key industrial hub for Metsimaholo, has seen businesses shut down, while potential investors are deterred by impassable roads, resulting in job losses and economic decline.”

Day says on November 20, 2024, the DA tabled a motion in the National Council of Provinces, urging the government to fix Metsimaholo’s roads.

“However, the ANC rejected the motion, ignoring the urgent need for intervention.”

“As the DA, we note that MLM is in contravention of Section 83 of the Municipal Systems Act and Sections 24, 156, and 229 of the Constitution by failing to maintain municipal roads. We recognise that this failure endangers residents travelling within the municipal boundaries. We also acknowledge that deteriorating infrastructure harms the economy and causes job losses at a time of severe economic challenges.”

“We call on the municipal manager and mayoral executive to take immediate steps to repair the roads and comply with the law. The DA remains committed to holding the executive and municipal administration accountable to ensure proper service delivery for the people of Metsimaholo.”
