Community warned against scam

"We have received several complaints from consumers saying they have received unsolicited calls from individuals who claim to be from DStv, saying they need to 'fix an issue' or 'upgrade their service.' Maxambela states that the culprits may ask for banking details, PINs, or even payment for non-existent services.

VEREENIGING-Residents of Sedibeng are urged to be vigilant following a growing scam in which fraudsters impersonate DStv representatives, claiming to offer assistance or services over the phone.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela reveals that the scammers’ modus operandi includes calling unsuspecting customers and requesting personal details, payments, or remote access to your decoder.

“We have received several complaints from consumers saying they have received unsolicited calls from individuals who claim to be from DStv, saying they need to ‘fix an issue’ or ‘upgrade their service.’ Maxambela states that the culprits may ask for banking details, PINs, or even payment for non-existent services.

“In some cases, they pressure customers into making immediate payments via fraudulent links.”

Maxambela says there are a few ways in which consumers can protect themselves.

“Refrain from sharing personal information, DStv will never ask for your banking details, passwords, or PINs over the phone. Verify calls, if someone claims to be from DStv, hang up and call DStv directly on their official customer service number. Avoid clicking on suspicious links and report suspicious activity.”

The Sedibeng district police commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, urges all Sedibeng residents to remain cautious and to spread awareness to prevent financial loss and identity theft.
