VANDERBIJLPARK – The smell of spilled oil, torn car fabric and the screams of injured occupants turned Frikkie Meyer Boulevard into a horrifying scene on Saturday evening, August 8.

This comes after a brutal collision claimed a man’s life following an accident between two Hyundais.

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said the Hyundai i10 appeared to be travelling at a very high speed and collided into an i20 that was about to make a turn onto the major road.

“The vehicle was in a hurry, so I moved out of the way. I immediately saw it in my rear-view mirror as we were approaching the bridge,” the eyewitness said.

Moments later, the witness heard and saw the devastating impact.

“I normally see such things in movies. It was horrifying to see a brutal accident of this kind happen before my eyes,” he said.

“All I recall was seeing the i20 turning onto its side before it was dragged backwards and ended up facing oncoming traffic,” he said.

Emergency personnel worked at the scene as the wrecked vehicles, debris and damaged road surface painted a grim picture of the collision.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash, including the identities of those involved and the cause of the fatal collision, were not immediately available.

Police investigations into the accident are expected to shed more light on what happened.

Boipatong police spokesperson Sergeant Matebello Tlokolo confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is underway and investigations are ongoing.

“Two Hyundai vehicles were involved in an accident. The i10 had four occupants, and the i20 had two occupants. The driver of the i20 died on scene, while some occupants were taken to a local hospital. A case has been opened, and investigations are ongoing,” she said.
