Accident at overpass on R59 claims a life
The vehicle fell off the overpass and landed on the road below the bridge.

VEREENIGING – A tragic accident at an overpass on the R59 left one dead and another in critical condition on Human Rights Day.
The accident happened shortly before 15:00 when a driver lost control of his vehicle on the overpass, and crashed into a barrier, after which the vehicle fell downwards.
The vehicle landed on its roof on the road below at the intersection of Houtkop Road and the Old Johannesburg Road.
The fire brigade, Gauteng Emergency Services, Security Without Borders, ER24, and Sharpmed assisted with the rescue effort.
The police secured the area, allowing the complex rescue operation to proceed unhindered.
Emergency workers released the passengers out of the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.
One of the occupants was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was stabilised and taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Members of the Frontline of Hope Ministries were also present to provide support to emergency services and bystanders.
A grateful Vaalweekblad reader appreciated the professional conduct of the emergency services. “We are grateful for the quick and efficient actions of the paramedics, firefighters, and traffic officers,” he said.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.
