Eskom and ELM celebrate milestone in account payments

“This achievement marks a turning point for Emfuleni, which has historically faced challenges in honouring its electricity accounts."

SEDIBENG.- Residents celebrate, good news is here!

Eskom and the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) have announced a significant milestone in the municipality’s electricity management. For the first time in months, ELM has successfully paid its electricity current account in full, following the signing of the Distribution Agency Agreement (DAA) in October 2024.

This was announced by the ELM on Tuesday.

The DAA appointed Eskom as the service delivery agent for the municipality’s electricity business.

“This achievement marks a turning point for Emfuleni, which has historically faced challenges in honouring its electricity accounts. The partnership between Eskom and the municipality is yielding positive results not only for Eskom but for the municipality and its customers as well.”

Since the implementation of the DAA, Emfuleni has achieved:

• An increase in payment levels, with year-on-year comparison.
• Marginal improvement in the reliability of electricity supply, reducing disruptions.
• Enhanced maintenance of infrastructure, ensuring a stable network.

Both parties added that these developments ultimately benefit residents and businesses, fostering a more reliable electricity supply that supports economic growth in Emfuleni. While this progress is commendable, both Eskom and Emfuleni acknowledge that there is still much work to be done.

“Sustaining this performance is key to ensuring that, in the long run, the municipality can independently manage its electricity business,” ELM said, while extending its gratitude to customers for paying for the electricity they consume and purchasing from registered electricity vendors.

Meanwhile, Rand Water had the privilege of hosting the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, alongside her deputy ministers, David Mahlobo and Sello Seitlholo, at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant and Station 5A Plant Upgrade Project in Vereeniging recently.

During his presentation, Rand Water group chief executive Sipho Mosai provided an overview of the Station 5 system, detailing its current capacity and future phases. Upon completion, Station 5 will provide an additional 1 200 million litres per day (ML/day) of portable water
to enhance Rand Water’s current supply capacity.

Construction of this project began in 2015, and to date, Rand Water has successfully delivered an additional 150 ML/day. Station 5 is crucial for meeting the growing water demand and ensuring a sustainable water supply.
