Vaal Dam level drops after sluice opening

The DWS is continuously monitoring the water levels in the Vaal River System.

With the Vaal Dam water levels reported at 107.30%, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) opened a third sluice gate on Tuesday afternoon, to increase outflows to approximately 400mᵌ/s and also manage the increase of inflows from upstream due to the ongoing rains.

According to Pieter Swart, a Midvaal councillor, a decrease in the dam’s water level was recorded today, with levels dropping to 106.65%.

The department is implementing these necessary water releases at the dams as part of dam safety precautions to safeguard the infrastructure. The DWS is continuously monitoring the water levels in the Vaal River System.
