Following the incident, the acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Anver Hammond, warned motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution on the roads.
Hammond stated that when crossing the road, safety must always be prioritised.
“First, find a safe and designated crossing point, like a crosswalk or pedestrian crossing. Before stepping into the street, stop at the curb or edge of the road and check for oncoming traffic.”
Hammond urged road users to also listen for any approaching vehicles.
“Only proceed when you’re confident the road is clear and you have a good view of the oncoming traffic.” He said that when driving, it’s crucial to maintain awareness of one’s surroundings and look down the road, specifically to where the vehicle will be in approximately 15-20 seconds.
“This proactive approach allows you to anticipate potential hazards and react safely. Looking ahead gives you time to recognise and react to potential hazards like other vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles.”
Hammond added that maintaining a safe following distance and looking ahead helps one maintain a safe following distance, preventing accidents from sudden stops or changes in traffic conditions.
