SHARPEVILLE.- The local sensation Relebohile Mofokeng’s dreams to play in the CAF Champions League final turned into a disappointment last week.
This was supposed to be his first CAF final since his promotion.
Orlando Pirates hit a dead end at the semi-final when Pyramids beat them 3-2 away from home.
Much was expected from Pirates, especially after Mamelodi Sundowns’ famous victory against their bitter rivals Al Ahly on the same night. Many were under the impression that the South African teams would be playing in the CAF Champions League for the first time in the history of African football.
However, Pirates “blew” it, much to the disappointment of many South African soccer fans.
Mofokeng was one of the best performers for Pirates on that night, even scoring the first goal to give his side a lead. However, the home team showed a fighting spirit when they equalised.
This Sharpeville-born sensation was all over the field in attack, but his effort was let down by Pirates’ defense which committed errors, which led to Pirates being eliminated from the CAF final. Mofokeng had said he was looking forward to his first appearance in the CAF Champions League final, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.
“It was my wish to play in the CAF final because I had been playing in each and every domestic cup final, but the biggest picture was this continental final. It would have been a fairytale to play in one of the biggest African continent finals. It is every player’s dream to play in the CAF Champions League final. We were unlucky on the day; we could have wrapped this game up earlier in the first half. But this is part of the game, and I have no doubt one day I will be playing in the final. My time will come, even though I thought it would happen sooner than expected,” said Mofokeng.
