Beloved giraffe dies at Bongani Mabaso Eco-Park

The 16-year-old giraffe, who had lived in the park for 14 years, had given birth to several calves.

VAALPARK – Animal lovers in the Vaal Triangle were heartbroken when a much-loved adult female giraffe passed away at the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park.

A sad goodbye to a true icon of the Eco Park.

The 16-year-old giraffe, who had lived in the park for 14 years, had given birth to several calves.
One of her calves still resides in the park.

A resident of Vaalpark, Gabby Fouche, who was one of the first people on the scene said it was devastating to witness the helpless animal.

“The giraffe apparently stepped into a shallow ditch and fell. It is unclear how long she was lying there. Before they could start helping her, we had to drag her with ropes to even ground. Everyone stepped in to help. More than 20 people. She was given several glucose bags for shock. I later learned that she didn’t make it.”

“The management of the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park would like to express our sincere thanks to game ranger David Dube, Dr. Kobus Kok, the veterinarian who assisted us, and members of the Vaalpark community for their swift response and efforts to save her,” the Eco Park said in a statement.
