VANDERBIJLPARK – She had been waiting at Vaalpets for her special human for more than two years. But now Leah is living the life, adored by her human and showered with love and treats.
Leah’s story started like many others. She was afraid and felt abandoned.
She watched as family after family walked by, cooing over the puppies and fellow shelter doggies, but never giving her a second glance.
She did, however, catch the eye of Gordon van Heerden, a volunteer at the Vaalpets Animal Shelter just outside Vanderbijlpark.
Leah, an 8-year-old Staffy-cross, crept into his heart, and it became his mission to find her a forever home.
Gordon and Alize worked tirelessly with her, providing training, socialisation, and plenty of love. They wanted to showcase her best qualities, from her playful demeanor to her affectionate nature.

When they were satisfied, they took the next step.
Gordon contacted Vaalweekblad and the end of 2024, and we published an article to see if Leah could enjoy a special Christmas. No one stepped in to save her.
So we tried again in February this year, hoping that Leah could be someone’s special Valentine.
This time, a kind gentleman named August contacted Gordon and opened his home and heart to Leah.

“We were overjoyed that she finally found her human! A match made in heaven,” explained Gordon.
“Leah’s tail wagged excitedly, and she did her signature happy dance as she settled into her new home. She quickly became the center of attention. August adores her, and she reciprocates with snuggles and affection,” said Gordon.
Leah sleeps inside on a warm bed, and her favourite spot is the couch!
She’s a reminder that every dog deserves a loving family, and with patience, persistence, and a little bit of luck, anything is possible.
“Thank you, Vaalweekblad and the community, for helping Leah find her happily ever after. Leah found her human who needed her as much as she needed them,” concluded Gordon.
