Pheleu wraps up Women’s Month in style

"He made me a household name in athletics. Because of him, I travelled the world, and I will forever be grateful.”

SHARPEVILLE. – As Women’s Month draws to a close, Sedibeng Ster reflects on the life and career of one of the Vaal’s finest athletes, Letitia Pheleu (43), a woman who conquered the world with her God-given talent.

Pheleu’s rise to stardom began when she joined the now-defunct New Generation Athletics Club, where her talent quickly made her stand out as one of the Vaal’s brightest young stars.

She went on to represent South Africa internationally, leaving her mark on the global athletics stage.

She was the first South African junior to win the South African 10km championships in Port Elizabeth, clocking an impressive time of 00:34:42. Pheleu also represented South Africa at the cross-country championships in Zimbabwe and won. To add feathers to her cap, Pheleu represented South Africa in the World Cross-Country Championships in Morocco. She further cemented her name in athletics history by becoming the U17 national cross-country champion at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Pheleu said she had the most successful career at a very young age.

Athletic South Africa’s history will never be written without mentioning her name. She hoisted the South African flag high on the international stage. Despite her achievements, Pheleu feels she has largely been forgotten by Athletics South Africa.

She expressed gratitude to her late coach, Joseph Diale, who played a vital role in shaping her career.

“I was fortunate to be coached by Joseph Diale, may his soul rest in peace. He made me a household name in athletics. Because of him, I travelled the world, and I will forever be grateful.”
