Weekday Operation Shanela nets 49 suspects in Sedibeng

SEDIBENG.- The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Sedibeng conducted another high-impact, crime-combating operation with the execution of Operation Shanela, focusing on the Sebokeng policing precinct yesterday.

The operation was led by the District Commissioner of Sedibeng, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, and supported by various crime-combating stakeholders. The collaborative efforts of all participating units yielded significant results, culminating in the apprehension of fourty nine suspects for different criminal offenses.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant, Nthabiseng Mokhachane said that prior to the day of Operation Shanela, detectives from across the Sedibeng District were instrumental in securing eighteen of the arrests, which included suspects linked to gender-based violence-related cases.

“On the day of the operation, thirty one suspects were arrested as a strong focus on visible policing was maintained and it included an intensified deployment to enforce liquor compliance regulations, trace wanted suspects, and execute law enforcement patrols in known hotspots.”

A strategic roadblock was placed at Golden Highway next to Zone 20 Sebokeng, reinforcing operational teams deployed across Sedibeng, resulted in the arrest of twenty one undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently undergoing processing for court proceedings and deportation, Mokhachane said.

Mokhachane added that law enforcement officials conducted searches on six hundred and six individuals and two hundred and thirteen vehicles, while eighty five vehicles were tested to determine their status in relation to theft/hijacking.

“Additionally, crime hotspot locations, four identified premises, filling stations, malls, taxi ranks, banks, ATMs, and six liquor establishments of which two were closed, and alcohol was confiscated.”

“During these patrols, five suspects were arrested for possession of drugs and one for dealing in drugs. Traffic law enforcement also formed a key part of the operation, whereby officers issued eighteen AARTO infringement notices valued at R9500.00 for various road traffic violations.”

The District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho extended her appreciation to all involved stakeholders and SAPS members for their professionalism, and commitment to restoring safety.
