Local boy secures a berth for Amajimbos in 2026 AFCON U17 Qualifier
“This isn’t just his achievement; it’s a victory for the entire community. Every sacrifice, every early morning and late training session has been worth it."
SEDIBENG. — Siyabonga Mbongo, the rising star from Orange Farm and standout forward for Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), has put his community on the global map.
He played a significant role in helping the South African U17 national team, Amajimbos, clinch the COSAFA Cup title. The victory secured their place in the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Amajimbos beat Angola 2-1 in a nail-biting final, with Mbongo scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute.
The national team received a hero’s welcome upon arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, where friends, family, and supporters gathered in celebration. Among them was Mbongo’s proud father, Sibusiso Dlamini, who shared his emotional journey watching his son grow from a boy playing with a tattered ball on the streets to a national hero.

“This isn’t just his achievement; it’s a victory for the entire community. Every sacrifice, every early morning and late training session has been worth it,” said Dlamini.
Mbongo’s inspiring journey from the dusty streets of Orange Farm to continental glory is inspiring to other young soccer players in the community. This grade 11 learner at Masibambane College continues to balance his academic responsibilities with his blossoming football career.

Back in Orange Farm, the community took to the streets celebrating Mbongo’s goal with cars spinning in the main streets like it was a wedding day. Meanwhile, RESA hosted the Gauteng Development League U19 Festival at Sicelo Stadium on Sunday.
