Police investigate murder case after Mozambican man was run over
A man dies after being chased and hit by a speeding bakkie, police call for witnesses.
MEYERTON – A Mozambican national died after being run over by a bakkie on Sunday. His friend narrowly escaped death.
According to Captain Nompumelelo Zazini, spokesperson for the Meyerton police, the deceased and three friends were walking to a smallholding in the Glen Donald area around 17:00 on October 26 to buy chicken.
Upon arriving at the gate of the smallholding, they encountered a man who ordered them to leave his property.
When they reached the gate, the man shouted at them to “f**k off” from his property.
The group allegedly left the premises, but a white Toyota Land Cruiser reportedly sped toward them at high speed. As they tried to flee, the vehicle chased after them.
Other men in vehicles also joined the pursuit. Petro Carlos Matheke, a Mozambican national, was struck by one of the vehicles.
His friend, Avelino Eduardo Chivure, survived the incident.
Matheke was taken to Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging for treatment, but was declared dead the following morning, October 27, at 01:13.
His body was taken to the Sebokeng mortuary. According to police, the vehicle that hit him was a white Ford Ranger, but its registration number is currently unknown.
Cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by both the Meyerton and Vereeniging police.
