SEBOKENG.- The Sebokeng police have warned that the dangers of illegal initiation schools have come under their spotlight as their operations to combat crime intensify, and this is a growing concern.

Sebokeng SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Thembekile Kubone has outlined the legal framework surrounding initiation schools, stressing that parental consent is mandatory for minors to attend, stating:

• No child can be given consent that they are going to initiation school if they are under 18 years. Over 18 years, his or her parents need to give consent/ permission. (There are rules, and we will not tolerate anyone who tries to open initiation schools in funny places, undermining our cultures. It goes deeper than just making money).

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane said that in her determination to combat illegal initiation schools, Brigadier Thembekile Kubone issued a stern warning to those running these illegal operations.

“To ensure compliance, a dedicated team of SAPS members and Sedibeng District Initiation Schools Forum vetted all the initiation schools in the Sedibeng area. This gesture was to ensure that all initiation schools would portray compliance,” Mokhachane said.

In addition to tackling illegal initiation schools, SAPS will be conducting inspections in the area where a partnership with local municipalities will be initiated. The focus will be on cracking down on chancers who did not undergo the vetting process.
