Urgent need for the upkeep of Tshepiso Cemetery
"During that period, nothing happened, and councillors came and went, but no one addressed the Tshepiso Cemetery issue."
SHARPEVILLE.- There is an urgent need for the upkeep of the Tshepiso Cemetery.
This is a point raised by Tebogo Keele, the chairperson of Mahlale-a-Lekoa, a non-profit organisation (NPO) from the Vaal.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Keele said that the three decades that the current government has been in power is a long time for them to have made necessary changes in the lives of ordinary South Africans.

“This is long overdue. During that period, nothing happened, and councillors came and went, but no one addressed the Tshepiso Cemetery issue. We thought that the present ‘young councillor’ would come up with a strategy, but still nothing happens. The situation is bad and needs attention.”

The cemetery is nestled between houses and shacks in Tshepiso Phase 1.
The cemetery is neglected, surrounded by RDPs and an informal settlement. There is no maintenance, and animals graze in it, showing what Keele said is disrespect for the dead.

“As a concerned citizen, I’m appalled that this sacred space has been left to deteriorate. The authorities must take immediate action to address these issues and ensure the cemetery is properly maintained and respected.”
He urged the local municipality and relevant authorities to intervene and take necessary steps to protect, “this important heritage site.”
