Vandals target trees in Vaal
Emfuleni sounds the alarm as increasing acts of tree vandalism endanger both green spaces and public safety.
VANDERBIJLPARK – The Emfuleni Local Municipality has issued a public notice highlighting the increasing incidents of vandalism of street trees in the area.
The municipality warns that this growing trend not only damages important urban green spaces but also poses a safety risk to residents.
According to the draft Street Tree By-Laws, any tree planted within municipal streets is the property of the municipality, and the removal or damage thereof is strictly regulated.
Officials emphasise the importance of community involvement and encourage residents to report any suspicious activity.
The notice points out three main forms of vandalism that are increasingly affecting local streets:
Ring-barking: When a strip of bark is removed around the trunk, it gradually weakens the tree. The tree can eventually fall during strong winds or storms.
Tree burning: Fires made at the base of trees weaken the tree’s structural integrity, making it vulnerable.
Illegal advertising:
The nailing or tying of advertisements onto trees creates entry points for infections and diseases, causing branches to rot and break off.
Municipal officials say that besides environmental damage, these actions also lead to public nuisance and loss of revenue.
Residents are encouraged to act as “lookouts” and report vandalism to the relevant departments.
The notice was issued by the Department of Parks and Cemeteries as part of an ongoing effort to protect and preserve Emfuleni’s urban tree population.
