Anglican Church of Resurrection hosts 16 Days of Activism

The “Red Bench” for domestic violence was unveiled by the church’s priest with the main purpose to encourage communication.

SEBOKENG.- The Anglican Church of Resurrection Leadership embarked on a march against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) at the church premises over the weekend.

This event formed part of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV, which is commemorated during this time of the year to show support for fellow South Africans who are victims of this pandemic.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Hilda Chaka, one of the church members behind this initiative, said this was the first commemoration they hosted as a church. She told Sedibeng Ster that the intention is to host this annually and make it big and better.

The “Red Bench” for domestic violence was unveiled by the church’s priest with the main purpose to encourage communication and conversations inside the church, therefore breaking the silence. The church leadership pledges that they will support the spiritual, physical, and mental well-being of the people of God irrespective of race.

There was a candlelight remembrance for the infected and those who passed on due to HIV/Aids. Chaka said churches must also play a role in educating the congregation about such things, and encourage them to be open about GBVF. She thanks all the people and organisations who honoured their invitation to attend this first-of-its-kind event. The church congregation and members of the community carried the placards with messages such as “Break the silence, get tested for HIV and get treatment”.

She told Sedibeng Ster that this event was organised by the church and in conjunction with a wellness group.

Chaka said she was humbled by the positive response from all the organisations, including the members of Sebokeng SAPS, who encouraged the community to report any abuse and not to keep quiet. Some of the NGOs that came to show support for this initiative include the Thabong Welfare Victim Organisation.
