Top ANC leaders call for safer roads at COSATU Memorial for Vanderbijlpark learners

The court has remanded the case until March 5 to allow for further police investigation.

VANDERBIJLPARK.– Top leaders from the ANC and COSATU have called for urgent changes to road safety following a tragic crash that claimed the lives of 14 school children on Monday.

The leaders were speaking at a memorial service held by the trade union federation COSATU.

The service took place today, at the roadside where the tragedy occurred as the children were travelling to school.

ANC Treasurer-General Dr Gwen Ramokgopa described the learners as the future professionals, workers, and leaders of the country. She said the nation was deeply wounded by the loss, with hearts “literally broken” by the tragedy.

Ramokgopa questioned how such a disaster could occur despite existing road safety policies. She called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and stronger programmes to instill respect for life, Ubuntu, and road rules, particularly among young drivers. She concluded by extending heartfelt condolences to the affected families.

COSATU Treasurer Fred Oosthuizen conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the federation.

He asked for prayers for the affected schools and teachers, whom he described as “second parents” now facing empty classrooms and deep emotional pain. Oosthuizen specifically called on the taxi industry to ensure that only properly licensed drivers are entrusted with the responsibility of transporting children.

The ANC Women’s League Gauteng leader, Faith Mazibuko, also conveyed a message of support.

Speaking at the disaster site, Mazibuko described the loss as a national shame that young lives could be taken in such a manner. She paid tribute to educators who had taught the learners for many years, noting the pain of losing pupils who were already progressing through their grades and full of promise.

Mazibuko further called for collective responsibility to prevent similar tragedies, urging educators, communities, and authorities to work together to safeguard learners.

The driver of the taxi, Ayanda Dludla (22), appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court this morning, where he officially abandoned his bail application.

He will stay in custody until his next court appearance.

The charges against Dludla have been upgraded since his arrest. While he initially faced counts of culpable homicide, the state is now pursuing 14 counts of murder.

Other charges include:

  • 3 counts of attempted murder
  • Driving without a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP)
  • Operating scholar transport without a valid permit

The tragedy occurred when Dludla’s taxi collided with a tipper lorry. Dludla was arrested shortly after being discharged from the hospital following the accident. During this morning’s brief proceedings, it was confirmed that the driver is being represented by Legal Aid.

The court has remanded the case until March 5 to allow for further police investigation.
