Former Banyana Banyana defender embarks on social responsibility campaign

“I commit to plough back to primary school learners because this is where it all started for me."

SEDIBENG.- Former Banyana Banyana defender turned athlete Rose ‘Pona’ Jijane will host primary school sporting activities as part of Women’s Month celebrations.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Jijane said this project is part of ploughing back into the community.

Jijane is still very involved in sports after retiring from international football. Her passion for sports converted her into an athlete (running). She has been participating in various marathons.

She told Sedibeng Ster Sport she will be hosting sporting activities for Boipatong primary schools in August.

Jijane, who had a short stint playing in Australia, started her football career playing with and against boys in the dusty streets of Boipatong. This was before she joined one of the legendary women’s soccer teams in the Vaal, Bophelong Ladies FC.

She also played for Soweto Ladies alongside another former Banyana Banyana star, Portia Modise.

Jijane said to make this event a success, she needs donations in the form of medals.

“I commit to plough back to primary school learners because this is where it all started for me. I’m passionate about sport; that is why when I retired from international football, I joined local athletics clubs to keep active. I make a special plea to local businesses, companies and sports departments to come on board and make this event a success. I don’t need much; just medals will be enough,” said Jijane.

Meanwhile, Jijane told Sedibeng Ster Sport that she will be participating in the upcoming Vaal River City Marathon again.
