Beware of robbers targeting Sedibeng residents
SAPS calls for community cooperation and immediate reporting of suspicious activity
Police in the Sedibeng District are urging community members to stay alert as an old criminal tactic has resurfaced and is once again being used to target unsuspecting victims across the area.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeke Maxambela says groups of about four men are moving around in different types of vehicles, approaching people under the false pretense of having found a large sum of money.
“These suspects start by distracting individuals, pretending they have just picked up cash and want to ‘share it’. They lure the victim closer with friendly conversation and promises of easy money,” she explained. “But once the person enters the vehicle or follows them to a suggested location, they are robbed of their phones, wallets, bags and any other valuables.”
A second method these criminals use involves targeting people seen holding or using cellphones. The suspects act interested in buying the phone or ask to “see it” briefly, sometimes saying they want to take a picture or show something on their own device.
“The moment the victim hands over the phone, the suspects grab it and flee,” Maxambela said.
Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho has called on residents to exercise caution during the festive season, when opportunistic crimes tend to increase.
She stressed the importance of refusing to hand personal belongings to strangers and warned the public never to enter a vehicle with unknown individuals under any circumstances.
The SAPS is encouraging community members to report any suspicious behaviour immediately to their nearest police station or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be submitted via the MySAPS App.
Maxambela urged residents to stay vigilant and work with the police to ensure a safer festive season for all in Sedibeng.
