VIDEO: Daylight dawns on a divided Tshwane

With Tshwane protests now continuing into their third day, sunlight has lit up a scene of devastation in a divided Tshwane metro.

Locals have diverted traffic, blocked roads and torched vehicles throughout the early hours of the morning.

Delivery vehicles and shops have been looted – with police advising motorists to use alternative routes and to stay away from the Atteridgeville and Mamelodi areas.

“Take your battles to Luthuli House” was the message from DA Tshwane mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga to ANC supporters who have engaged in violent protest actions in various parts of the metro.

Following the official announcement of Thoko Didiza as mayoral candidate for Tshwane, residents in Atteridgeville and Mamelodi went on the rampage, setting alight trucks and buses, demanding that the ANC reverse its decision of nominating Didiza.

Several residents who spoke to The Citizen, said they wanted incumbent mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to continue being in charge, saying Didiza was not born in Tshwane and that she has to go back to KwaZulu-Natal.

Meanwhile, speaking to The Citizen, DA mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga condemned the violence, saying it showed that the ANC was at war with itself.

Violent protests began on Sunday evening following the ANC’s mayoral candidacy decision, with events escalating last night when 16 buses were burnt.

The Citizen photographer Jacques Nelles had to flee the area with protesters targeting his vehicle overnight.
