Athletes display courage at biathlon champs

They held their own against some very tough competition.

It’s nothing short of remarkable that some 12 youngsters from the South Coast were able to compete at the recent SA National Biathlon champs held in Bloemfontein.

Just to get the chance to compete in such an event is an honour, and no doubt will have done them the world of good in terms of gaining experience and seeing where they stand against some of the best in the country.

Alex Labuschagne (Southcity) was fourth in the U17 age group. Her time in the run was 2:41:34 and 1:01:62 in the swim (the fastest swim).

Liam Venter (Suid-Natal Primary) took part in the U13 age group and placed sixth out of a total of 80 boys.
He ran the 800m in a time of 2:33:00 and swam the 50m freestyle in 33:16 seconds.

Not far behind was Keagan Ramos (Southcity), who placed ninth in the same age group. His time for the 800m run was 2:41:84, and 50m swim 32:36.

These two will still have another year at this level.

Eve Steynberg (Izotsha Primary) was one of the youngest at the event in the U11 age group. She finished 12th in her swim and 33rd in SA out of 81.

Kaitlyn Ramos placed 27th out of 76 girls in the U15 age group. Her run time for the 800m was 2:48:52, and for the 100m swim 1:10:74. She is now at St John’s DSG in Pietermaritzburg.
